Disturbing Trend has Young Girls Asking the Internet, 'Am I Pretty or Ugly?'

Postby little_tigress » Tue Nov 05, 2013 7:21 pm

I think this is just so sad. I can identify with the sentiment behind it because growing up I never actually felt beautiful and placed far too much value in other peoples words. When they said I was ugly, I believed them. Its sad to see other girls fall victim to the same trap.

And once its on the internet, as we all know, it never really goes away. In 10 years, I wonder what these girls will say about having opened themselves up in such a vulnerable way to a world of strangers.

It reminds me of the old site "hot or not?". I can identify too and it's a big reason why I don't put my own photo up on any forum. The mean comments stay with you. I get really critical of any photo I put online.

LOL I remember that site. I stopped visiting it after almost three years of never breaking a rating of "2".

I'm sorry, but I don't feel very sorry for people who ask the opinion of the internet on their looks. There's no way they don't know from the outset that their options range from "A WILD SNORLAX APPEARS" to "TITS OR GTFO". What's disturbing is that it reveals a kind of recursive voyeurism... they want to know what everyone else is thinking at every moment—about them. Complimentary, insulting, doesn't matter as long as they aren't being ignored. It's narcissistic. That's what is dangerous about this.

Everyone wants to be liked and wanted, and the most visceral want is simple visual attraction. We're visual creatures, experiencing most of our lives through our eyes, so... the internet being a giant Mechanical Turk waiting to happen makes things like this possible. I feel like the internet and technology in general has allowed the things that have always been in human nature to be more readily seen.

This is very sad. It's like Wesley says everyone needs to be liked and wanted but we have created a culture for girls where their only value is a sexual one. For this generation the internet is the most important tool of socialization and it's a boys club. I am so happy I am in my 30s. I would not have the strength to be a woman or a girl coming of age in the internet era.

I've never thought that before, that the net is a boys club. Anybody else think that?

As far as posting pics to be rated, you need thick skin to do that. It makes me laugh looking on facebook. The good looking friends I have change their photos much more often than the others. Ah, to be pretty...

Is the internet a boys club? Well at the risk of scratching the infected itch that is today's #gamergate, I think it is kinda. For weird historical reasons. Probably some cultural reasons too. It just appears that there is a larger population of males to females, or at least there was in recent history. Get a bunch of guys involved in something and it will eventually devolve into fart jokes and porn.

Behold, the internet!

It's definitely a boys club.
